We’ve opened up the space to make it lighter and more welcoming

Our history – in January 2014 Wrexham County Borough Council (WCBC) announced that it would be closing a number of community facilities. In the Gresford, Marford and Rossett areas the death toll was high. Gresford had already lost its youth club – now it was going to lose its library and the Marford Community Centre was also earmarked for closure.

The communities of the three villages rallied round. The library and community centre could be run by people in the three villages, couldn’t they? Indeed they could!

A meeting was called to consider how the library could be saved. From that meeting a steering group was formed and this group eventually transmogrified into the directors of the board of a company limited by guarantee (CLG) which would manage the newly created community library. And so the Gresford and District Community Library (GDCL) was born. It opened on 6th May 2014 and is now a company limited by guarantee (CLG) registered charity (No 1159045) and is managed and staffed entirely by volunteers – we have 53 of them, including the directors.

WCBC has been really helpful in enabling the community library to become a reality; nobody wants to close libraries but these are hard times. GDCL has WCBC stock; the WCBC library van calls every Tuesday to bring books from other libraries which Gresford, Marford and Rossett people have requested and to take away books belonging to other Wrexham libraries which our people have brought back to Gresford. At GDCL you have access to the more than one million books and other items which Wrexham holds and if you’re a member of any Wrexham library you’re a member of GDCL as well.
